Rachael Ray: Rachael's Daytime Talkshow

A Lesson in Slow Cooking

A Lesson in Slow Cooking
Aired on: March 6, 2009

Rachael is the master of the 30-minute meal, but she admits that she's not as familiar with slow cooker recipes. So she invites two sisters-in-law who call themselves the "slow cooker queens" to shed some light on the technique. "What I love the most about cooking in slow cookers is the ease of turning out a fantastic dish," says Caryn, who gets consistent results making main dishes, dips and desserts in just one pot. "I think the slow cooker really imparts wonderful flavors that build through time. If you're really strapped for cash, you can buy a really cheap piece of meat and cooking it in the Crock-Pot® will make it taste like a million bucks!"

Once the meal is done, her sister-in-law Andrea says you will enjoy a quick cleanup from this one-pot dinner. "You can put all of your side [dishes] in with your meat and it's so energy efficient," she says. "It just gives me so much more time to do stuff around the house, spend valuable time with my children." She suggests trying chicken and meat dishes in a slow cooker, along with one of Rachael's favorite ingredients: pasta! "A lasagna is a low-moisture dish so it works perfectly with the no pre-boil pasta," Andrea says. "It's really easy. You just put everything in and put the top on. Three hours on high and boom! Done."

Rachael asks Caryn and Andrea to test out a variety of slow cookers, and Andrea says that while all of the pots were fantastic, she is still loyal to one version: the Crock-Pot® Trio Cook & Serve BuffetTM. Rachael announces she's giving one to every member of the audience!
